Questions for the wellness quiz
Answer True or False...
1. A psychoactive drug is a substance which changes the way the
mind functions and may also have a damaging effect on physical health.
2. The use of marijuana can cause memory problems.
3. Impaired driving is caused by drinking alcohol only.
4. It is possible to damage your lungs by smoking cannabis.
5. A person can't die from drinking alcohol.
6. It is not harmful to drink alcohol when you are taking medication.
7. Over time and with regular use, people tend to need more of a
drug to get the same 'high' they got when they first started using
the drug.
8. A 12 oz bottle of beer contains about the same amount of pure
alcohol as a 5 oz glass of wine.
9. Even one standard serving of alcohol (i.e. a 12 oz bottle of
beer, 5 oz glass of wine, cocktail with 1 1/2 ounces of alcohol,
or a 3 oz glass of sherry, port or vermouth) can affect driving
ability.
10. A person dependent on drugs experiences both physical and psychological
dependence, regardless of the drug used.
Answers
1. True. Some psychoactive drugs are illegal, such as cannabis and
cocaine. Other psychoactive drugs are legal, such as alcohol, tobacco,
and certain medications, although they are regulated in various
ways. There are also many other chemicals intended for household,
automotive or industrial use, which when used inappropriately (e.g.
sniffed), can alter mental and physical states (e.g. glue, nail
polish remover and gasoline). Psychoactive drugs may also have a
damaging effect on physical health.
2. True. Immediately after using marijuana, short-term memory may
be impaired. Regular, heavy use may continue to inhibit memory,
concentration, and ability to understand complex information. These
problems tend to clear up when marijuana use stops, although it
may take months.
3. False. A driver may be impaired by a substance other than alcohol.
An impaired driver is someone who is unable to operate the vehicle
safely. This could happen if the person has been drinking alcohol
or using other drugs, including certain medications, or is just
too tired to drive safely.
4. True. Regular, heavy cannabis use may damage the respiratory
system over time. Like tobacco, cannabis contains many cancer-causing
agents. Because many people who smoke cannabis also smoke tobacco,
it is difficult to tell what separate effects each substance has
on the respiratory system. Although both cannabis and tobacco may
damage the respiratory system, smoking both substances may be even
more harmful than smoking only one of them, because each one causes
a different type of damage to the respiratory system.
5. False. In the short-term, people can die of alcohol poisoning.
Alcohol poisoning can happen when a person drinks too much alcohol
too quickly on one occasion. When alcohol poisoning occurs, the
brain no longer controls automatic functions, such as breathing.
A person with alcohol poisoning may die of suffocation, because
the brain stops telling the body to breathe. In addition, many deaths
are caused by accidents involving impaired drivers. In the long-term,
heavy alcohol use over a long period of time can cause many fatal
diseases, such as alcoholic liver cirrhosis.
6. False. Mixing alcohol with certain medications can cause a number
of problems. It can cause more impairment than if each substance
is used separately, possibly leading to falls or driving accidents.
Also, the alcohol may cause the medication to become less effective.
It is also possible for the alcohol to react negatively with the
medication, causing a person to become sick. Alcohol may increase
the strength of the side effects or create new ones. It is best
to check with a doctor or pharmacist to find out if it is safe to
drink alcohol while taking a specific medication.
7. True. This is called 'tolerance'. As tolerance increases, larger
amounts of the drug must be taken to get the same effect. When more
and more of the drug is used, the risk of harm to the body increases.
8. True. It is possible to compare the amount of alcohol in different
types of drinks by referring to a "standard serving" of
alcohol. A standard serving of alcohol is contained in a drink with
1 1/2 ounces of pure alcohol. The following drinks all contain about
1 1/2 ounces of pure alcohol:
1 12 oz bottle of regular beer
1 5 oz glass of wine
1 cocktail with 1 1/2 ounces of alcohol
1 3 oz glass of sherry, port or vermouth
9.
True. Even one of these standard servings of alcohol can make a
person less coordinated, slower to react, less able to see and hear
clearly, pay attention to several things at once and judge distances
and speed. Alcohol can also create a false sense of confidence and
reduce inhibition, further increasing the danger. These effects
increase as more alcohol is consumed. When planning to drive, it
is best not to drink any alcohol.
10. False. Some drugs, such as alcohol and tobacco, cause both physical
and psychological dependency, while other drugs, like LSD, cause
only psychological dependency. Both physical and psychological dependency
can make it difficult to stop using a drug.
